The Renault Fuego continued in the vein of the 15s and 17s of the Seventies and became a fondly remembered grand touring car, best known for its ability to deal with long journeys in great comfort and reasonable pace and above all in style. Based on the Renault 18 and designed by Michel Jardin, it offered an aerodynamically efficient body which was both beautiful and roomy for a coupe making it a best seller from 1980 -1982 in Europe.

This Fuego GTS has an interesting past and one that has enabled it to remain in such remarkable condition for just over forty years. In a brief period in the early 1980s, it was more cost effective if one ordered a right hand drive vehicle in Europe and drove it back to the UK, essentially a self-import. This example was purchased new in Belgium in 1982 and originally driven on Belgium number plates; in 1984 it was first registered in the UK.

The first owner worked in San Francisco as a sea pilot there, and then in Alaska. Driven occasionally and MOT’d regularly, the Fuego resided in the Isle of Wight, only ever used occasionally and always returned to a warm garage and tucked underneath a dust cover. The custodian retired to Arizona and decided that he was unlikely to ever drive the Renault again, so in May 2021 the motor car was offered for sale with just one owner, an odometer reading of 30000 miles and in astonishingly original condition.

The current custodian, a Renault collector, is thinning his collection to make way for a new project, hence its sale once again. It is in original, exceptional, rust-free condition and benefits from numerous accessory options including an electric fabric sunroof, fog lamps, body stripes and side protection mouldings. Correct Renault alloy wheels have been fitted by the vendor and the motor car has been recommissioned, with the fitting of a new battery, master cylinder, gas struts and wiper blades. The interior is immaculate; the carpets have been protected by a set of Renault rubber mats and the plastic is clean and not warped or cracked. Mechanically there are no known faults - the 1647cc engine runs ‘like a dream and is exactly as a just-run-in 30000 mile engine should be’ we are told.

The history file contains the original Fuego driver’s handbook, a Fuego sales brochure,  a 2010 service sheet and folder, several older MOT test certificates, invoices from 2013 (for an MOT and new water pump) and more recently, SORN documentation, correspondence, two older V5Cs and the current V5C registration certificate.
